The main function is the Voice Activation. When there is silence, while nobody is at home or during napping time, it turns to standby mode, and it draws just 1mA from the battery. During activity, as conversations nearby, it starts transmitting.
The estimated distance is 200m in urban region and as much as 600m (line of sight).
